Tourism – Tourists website for Gran Canaria :

Daily life – Administrations and services generally are usually open 9am-2pm. Shops: Opening hours may vary greatly in different areas but generally, open at 10am, afternoon siesta and evening hours from 6pm (bigger stores are open without interruption). Lunch times from 1pm to 3.30pm, dinner time from 8pm to 11pm (welcome to your holidays!).

Travel – Valid ID card or passport (EU and CH). Best season in May and June. Average temperature 24°C. Careful, though, it can get chilly in the evening throughout the year. Time zone: GMT (UK time).

Budget – Currency: Euro (€), credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Average prices for a room are between €40 and €65 depending on services, location and season. Average prices for a meal are between €12 and €25. Considering the constant temperature throughout the year, high season is in the winter or during the (numerous!) events organised on the island. Stamp for Europe: €1.35.

Transports – roads are in excellent condition and very developed (careful with motorbikes!). A 40km taxi ride costs about €45-€50. Extensive bus network, especially Bus Global or “Guaguas” of Las Palmas. Renting a car can be a clever idea to go in the mountains. The following website is a very useful price comparator:  https://www.rentalcars.com/en/region/es/gran-canaria/. Travel time between Las Palmas et Maspalomas: 45 min (by car), travel time between the airport and Las Palmas: approximately 20 min by car depending on traffic.

Safety – the islands are all safe (apart on the road maybe… alcohol limit is 0.5) the ocean can be more dangerous. Please read about the tides and respect the signs on beaches. Another danger that should not be ignored is Autre danger à ne pas prendre à la légère : spurges. These plants can be found everywhere but their white sap is extremely toxic: stay away from them! As the island is very dry, wild barbecueing is forbidden at all times. It is recommended to drink only bottled water.
